District News: Juneteenth Letter from Dr. Davis

Do naszej społeczności Utica City School District,

As we near the end of another school year, we have one more important holiday to celebrate and reflect on: Juneteenth.

Observed this year on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is a day to honor African American freedom and achievement. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of justice, equality, and the ongoing fight against systemic racism.

I encourage you to explore The National Museum of African American History & Culture's Juneteenth webpage, where you can find a lot of great information and historical context on the importance of this annual event.

Our vibrant and diverse community in Utica is a living testament to the strength and beauty that emerges from embracing and celebrating our differences. Juneteenth is not just a day of historical significance, but also a day for each member of our community to celebrate their unique cultural heritage, which enriches our collective identity.

In a world that often feels divided, it is crucial that we promote kindness and empathy in all that we do. Let us use this time to reflect on how we can contribute to making our world a more compassionate and understanding place, starting right here in our schools and neighborhoods.

With only a few school days left in this academic year, I encourage everyone to make the most of this time. Let's finish the year strong, support one another, and celebrate our achievements together.

Please note that our schools will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in observance of Juneteenth. I hope you all take this time to reflect, learn, and celebrate the importance of this holiday.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Utica City School District. Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for all our students.

Gorące pozdrowienia,

Dr Kathleen Davis
Tymczasowy kurator
